The Staten Island Advance is a daily newspaper that focuses on the community it serves. Founded in 1886, it is owned by Newhouse Newspapers.

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

College interns at the Staten Island Advance are given the same reponsibilities as full-time staff reporters. They field phone calls, take meeting notices, cover spot news events, write obituaries and feature stories, handle re-writes, conduct interviews, and arrange photo assignments. They are encouraged to suggest and follow through on their own story ideas.

Stories written by interns are published in news, Lifestyle, Business and the weekend entertainment section.

Interns spend time with reporters at the Advance City Hall and Borough Hall bureaus, and accompany photographers and police reporters on assignments. They can elect to work on a regular basis in the Lifestyle Department or with the Entertainment Editor.

They are sometimes called upon to work as a team on one assignment, such as a poll or a survey.

They are supervised by a coordinator who meets with them weekly to monitor progress, review writing technique, discuss ideas and solve problems.

The Staten Island Advance internship includes an hourly wage based on a 40-hour work week. Interns rotate on three shifts - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 2 to 10 p.m., and 4 p.m. to midnight. Some weekend work is required.

The program offers a comprehensive, hands-on experience in the newsroom of a daily newspaper.
